Tigers lose hard-fought game to Riverside |

By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Correspondent WAYNESFIELD - In a varsity boys basketball game which was close the entire way, the visitors pulled out a narrow victory Friday night in Northwest Central Conference action. “I think we got a little tired, and I don’t know if our heads were where they needed to be in the fourth quarter,” said Waynesfield-Goshen coach Romie Youngpeter of the Tigers, 65-63, loss to the Riverside Pirates. “And that just comes with learning how to finish. We need to learn how to finish games.” “We have a scrappy team, which I think really helped tonight,” Riverside coach Nathan Millice said.
Leading the Tigers (0-3, 0-1 NWCC) on the night was center Taylor Miller with 15 points and 16 rebounds, while shooting guard Connor Mortimer added 15 points and seven rebounds, small forward Cory Hickman had 12 points, and point guard Jerry Weeks added 10 points. In addition for the Tigers, power forward Matt Spangler contributed six points and five rebounds, Jacob Frank netted three points, and Andrews had two points. The Pirates (1-3, 1-0) also had four players hit double figures, being led by point guard Kyle Hurley with 20 points, three steals and three assists. Also for Riverside were center Kyle Baughman with 19 points and six rebounds, and shooting guard Brandon Whitehead and power forward Eric Egbert with 11 each. Egbert also led the way with seven rebounds and three blocks. The first period was won by the Tigers, 12-11, but they were outscored, 14-9, in the second period to trail, 25-21, at halftime. Waynesfield-Goshen retook control of the game in the third period by winning the stanza, 23-16, for a 44-41 lead. In the fourth period, the Tigers were up, 46-41, before Riverside’s Hurley led his team with eight straight points and a half-court assist for another basket. One more score by the visitors pushed their lead up to 53-46, and they never trailed again. The closest the Tigers would get would be at 60-58 with only a few minutes remaining, but the Pirates always had an answer, as they pulled out the 2-point victory. The game was already in hand at 65-60, before the game ended on a Tiger 3-pointer at the buzzer. Waynesfield-Goshen shot 24-of-55 from the floor in the contest, including 4-of-13 from behind the 3-point line and were 11-of-24 at the charity stripe. Riverside shot 24-of-67 from the field, including 6-of-23 from behind the 3-point arc and were 11-of-20 at the foul line. The rebounding battle was won by the Tigers, 29-25, with a, 12-10, advantage for the Pirates on the offensive glass. Riverside also won the turnover battle, 20-6. In the junior varsity contest, the Tigers picked up the, 60-41, win.
