Past to future: Wintzer Co. finds artifacts during build

 Image

By JENNIFER TANGEMAN
Staff Writer
Few people exhibit an enthusiasm about historical artifacts as Jim Bowsher does.
When crews working for G.A. Wintzer and Son Co. started working to build new office space on West Auglaize Street, they came across some interesting finds where a rental home had previously sat.
Jim Kent and others of Kent Surveying began finding pieces of artifacts. They called in local history buff, Bowsher, to try to figure out what the bits and pieces meant.

Vacant home target of arson
Thursday, 19 November 2009
By KAREN CAMPBELL
Assistant Managing Editor
An attempted arson was reported by the owner of 507 E. Auglaize St. on Tuesday afternoon.
The vacant home is undergoing renovations.
Wapakoneta Fire Chief Kendall Krites said it is the second arson in the city within approximately three months.
Minor damage was done to the basement and underside of the first floor of the home owned by Jim Daily.
He called after discovering the fire, which had self-extinguished.
Krites said it appears someone tried to throw what may have been a molotov cocktail through a basement window.
Samples were taken and are being sent to the Ohio State Fire Marshall’s lab for verification, Krites said.
“The investigation is still open and we would like more information,” Krites said.
Another arson was reported at a residence undergoing renovations at 601 Court St. on Aug. 8.
Krites said a reward was posted, but they never found anyone connected to the arson and no one came forward with any additional information.
“It appeared someone poured gasoline inside a rear window of the home, which again was vacant, with renovations almost complete and it getting ready to be rented out,” Krites said.
He said the home, which is owned by Kirk Wilmarth, was heavily damaged, but not destroyed.
Anyone with information on either fire is encouraged to call the Wapakoneta Fire Department at 419-738-2014.
