MILFORD CENTER — The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity football team ended their regular season Friday night with a big win over their Northwest Ohio Central Conference rival and secured a spot in the state playoffs. The Tigers continued to use a potent rushing attack to secure a 25-14 win over the Fairbanks Panthers, clinching the conference title with a perfect 7-0 record. The Tigers are 9-1 overall, with their only blemish a 28-13 loss to the Anna Rockets, who also are playoff bound. The win gives them their first outright conference title since 2006. “We did everything we set out to do tonight,” Waynesfield-Goshen varsity coach Gary Spencer said after Friday’s contest. “It definitely was a big win for our seniors, everyone worked hard, and overall I couldn’t ask for a better group of kids. I‘m extremely proud of them.”
Seniors Keaton Fetter, Christian Lament, Taylor Miller and Ryan Spencer led the rushing attack for the Tigers. Spencer gained 153 yards on 15 rushes to lead Waynesfield-Goshen, while Lament gained 62 yards on 6 carries. Miller rushed for 37 yards on 10 carries, while Fetter contributed 36 yards to the cause on 13 rushes. The Tigers gained 281 yards on the ground. Tiger quarterback Conner Mortimer managed to gain 7 yards on rushes and keep the Panthers defense honest by connecting on 2-of-5 for 33 yards on a windy night. All the scoring came in the first half with Spencer leading the way with a 63-yard run for a score. Mortimer connected on an 8-yard screen play to give Waynesfield-Goshen a 12-0 lead and control of the game. Fetter and Spencer scored in the second quarter for the final tallies. Fairbanks sophomore Max Burnside matched Spencer by gaining 141 yards on 13 carries. Senior Tyler Smith toted the ball 11 times for 41 yards. Panther quarterback Nick Gibson was 2-of-11 with two interceptions, managing only 11 yards through the air. “Fairbanks has a great football team and they sure know how to put up a good fight,” Spencer said. “They executed their plays very well at times and did great job of holding their own at the line of scrimmage. Our kids earned everything that they worked so hard for tonight.”
