Staff photo/William Laney By BRYAN CRAFT Sports Correspondent WAYNESFIELD - An early turnover and a big punt return gave the Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity football team a big enough lead, before they wore down the visitors. The Tigers picked up a 26-0 victory Friday night in Northwest Central Conference action agains the Upper Scioto Valley Rams. “Nights like tonight, defense really had to step up and they did a good job,” Waynesfield-Goshen coach Gary Spencer said.
Waynesfield-Goshen rushed the ball 36 times for 173 yards, and junior QB Connor Mortimer went 3-of-8 passing for 32 yards and a touchdown. Leading the rushing attack for the Tigers was senior Ryan Spencer with 20 carries for 107 yards, while senior Taylor Miller had seven carries for 54 yards and a touchdown. The Tiger defense held the Rams to 21 carries for 43 yards, while senior QB Rhys Rose went 10-of-22 passing for 111 yards with four interceptions. “Our running game, they were slowing it down, and that’s what we do - we pass,” USV coach Ryan Rose said... “In three years, this is the first game we’ve ever played in the rain. We’ve been fortunate three years, and it really hurt us.” On the second possession of the game, Tiger junior Jacob Waitman made a 50-yard interception return for the early 6-0 lead at the 8:52 point of the first period. The score stood up until 1:37 remained in the third period when Tiger senior Keaton Fetter hauled in a 10-yard pass for a touchdown from Mortimer. The score was set up with a 43-yard punt return by Fetter to the Rams 10-yard line. Waynesfield-Goshen (6-1, 4-0 NWCC) added two more insurance touchdowns in the fourth period. The first score came on a 40-yard interception return by senior Nate Brassell for the 19-0 lead with 5:06 to play in the contest. Finally, Miller added on a 28-yard touchdown run with 3:14 to play in the game for the 26-0 final. “I think their team folded at that point,” Gary Spencer said of the interception return for the score in the fourth period. “That’s demoralizing to a team.” Waitman and Brassell each had two interceptions in the game for Waynesfield-Goshen. Also in the contest, the Tigers had six fumbles and lost five, while USV had six fumbles and lost two. W-G gained five first downs in the contest and were called for six penalties for 40 yards. The Rams (4-2, 1-2) had seven first downs and were penalized five times for 50 yards.
