By WILLIAM LANEY Managing Editor A Wapakoneta resident can refurbish her house to restore the front porch to the way it looked when originally designed based on a catalogue of homes. During Monday’s meeting of the Wapakoneta Zoning Board of Appeals, Wapakoneta resident Rachel Barber spoke on behalf of her mother, Mary Lou Barber, about restoring a front porch on her mother’s residence.
“In 1964, my parents bought the house at 408 E. Auglaize St. and the porch was removed, and she wants to restore the original porch,” Rachel Barber told board members. “We know what the original porch looks like because it actually is from a pattern book from the 1897 Shoppell’s book.” Barber presented board members with a pattern from the book. Her mother intends to restore it to the exact measurements. “This is something she has wanted to do for the past 46 years,” Barber said. She explained when originally built contractors would subscribe to catalogues, such as Shoppell’s, to offer a variety of designs to people interested in building a home. The house at 408 E. Auglaize St. was actually built by Rachel Barber’s great grandfather for Ed Abe. Zoning Board of Appeals members granted Barber a 14-foot front yard variance. The variance takes effect in 35 days, or approximately five days after the minutes are read at the next meeting.
