Staff Reports Girls Golf Wapak at WBLs In a match-up of five Western Buckeye League teams, the Wapakoneta Redskins girls golf team took home third place overall in Thursday’s WBL Tournament, held in Defiance. Shawnee wound up with the top team finish (386), while Celina finished second (389). Behind Wapak were Bath (401) and Defiance (480). The front nine proved to be the undoing for the Redskins. The team combined to hit 20 strokes higher than its normal average.
“The course was pretty wet from watering and the long rough added shots to scores really quickly if you missed it in the wrong spot,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “We needed to get off to a good start and it just didn’t happen.” Wapak picked things up on the back nine and actually put forth the best score of all teams in the match. But because of the front nine numbers, the best it could finish was third. “Even though we didn’t win, I’m extremely proud of their effort and perseverance that they showed on the back nine,” West said. “They never gave up and never quit trying until they were done. This is a talented group of ladies and even though we didn’t play all 18 holes at our best, they showed their true Redskin pride.” Kristina Kessen led Wapak with a 93, which was also the fifth-best score in the match. Janelle Allen shot a 99, Katy Keckler a 101 and Courtney Knippen a 106. Sheridan Balyeat of Shawnee medaled in the match with an 83. Going forward, Wapak will have a pair of matches next week leading up to sectionals, which will take place October 6. They will play Celina and in the Wayne Trace Invitational. After the split in the WBL, the Redskins’ record stands at 14-4 overall. Boys Golf Botkins at SCL In a season in which strides were made toward becoming a consistent low-scoring team, the Botkins Trojans played the Shelby County League Tournament Thursday and finished fifth out of the seven teams with a 356 score. The Trojans were led by Eric Ambos (83), Adam Bornhorst (85), Graham Counts (85) and Connor Bornhorst (100). Russia won the tournament with a team 318. Anna (320), Fort Loramie (328), Houston (347), Jackson Center (359) and Fairlawn (385) all finished around Botkins. After the event, Ambos was named Second Team All-County. Adam Bornhorst was an Honorable Mention.Girls VolleyballW-G vs. USV The Waynesfield-Goshen Tigers varsity girls volleyball team won a home match, 3-0, over Upper Scioto Valley Thursday night to improve their record to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in the NWCC. Top performers for the Tigers were Brooke Shaw (18 kills), Kaylee Patton (seven kills), Jessica Riemesch (five aces), Alyssa Dyer (19 assists) and Hailey Whitaker (nine digs). Scores to the games were 25-14, 25-16, 25-17. However, those weren’t the most important numbers of the night. Thursday’s match was also the first-ever Volley for the Cure event put on by the Tigers. All proceeds generated from the raffles, bake sale, silent auction, and other items for sale at the match were donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation to support breast cancer awareness and research. “Everything went wonderfully and we couldn’t have done this without the parents, community members and the administration at school,” W-G varsity coach Karen Dunson said. Botkins vs. Anna In come-from-behind fashion, the Botkins Trojans varsity girls volleyball team earned a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the Anna Rockets Thursday. After dropping the first two games to Anna, 15-25, 11-25, the Trojans rallied to win the next three in a row, 26-24, 27-25, 15-13.
