By ANDREA POTEET Staff Writer A Wapakoneta High School football player is in critical but stable condition at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after a car crash in Union Township on Sunday.
Jordan Rick, 17, lost control of a 1995 Ford Mustang, registered to his mother, Marie Rick, while driving to Wapakoneta from his friend’s Greenville home. Jordan Rick lost control while driving on Deep Cut Road at 12:44 a.m. The vehicle went off the right side of the road, struck a guard rail, spun around and struck a utility pole, according to Mercer County Sheriff’s Office reports. Life Flight crews transported Rick from Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys to Miami Valley Hospital at approximately 2:30 a.m. Sunday. “He’s lucky to be alive,” his aunt, Sue Sidener said. “I guess it shows the importance of wearing a seat belt.” The Wapakoneta junior suffered fractures to his face and underwent surgery to wire his jaw shut Thursday, Sidener said. Members of the Wapakoneta Redskins football team signed a jersey and football for Rick. She said the car flipped 11 feet in the air and sheared off the top of the telephone pole it struck. Her nephew climbed out of a 3-foot hole on the passenger side of the vehicle, which was totaled. The crash is still under investigation by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office. |
