Staff photo/JenniferTangeman By JENNIFER TANGEMAN Staff Writer CRIDERSVILLE — Students at Cridersville Elementary School building agree on one thing they like about their new school — it’s big. “It’s nice, it’s clean, and it’s big,” a fourth-grader studying in Deb Eley’s classroom said. Students seemed to find a common thread to every facet of the new building, even the bathrooms. “I like the new bathrooms— those things are huge,” Zac Winget said.

By KRISTA HAYES Staff Writer In bringing back the old days to remember the late Rev. Lawrence J. Tebbe at the 119th annual Fryburg Homecoming, the raffling off one of the pastor’s many paintings is scheduled to be held with proceeds to benefit St. John Catholic Church. Born in 1901, Tebbe served as pastor of the Fryburg church for 34 years from 1938 to 1972. An avid artist, fisherman, craftsman and teacher, he later changed the Fryburg Homecoming to be held the Sunday before Labor Day so people could go fishing over the holiday weekend, after the homecoming was originally held in Fryburg on Labor Day for several years. “He was a kind, generous, patient, talented and modest man who was devoted to the blessed Virgin Mother,” Connie Butcher, St. John Catholic Church Parish member and Fryburg Homecoming Committee member, said. “Father Tebbe died on a fishing trip in 1972 doing what he loved to do and even today he is still remembered for his many talents by the people who knew and loved him, with many of his works of art still present in the village of Fryburg.”
Tebbe promoted the Fryburg Homecoming to raise money to help keep the church and parish self-supporting. Thus, every year Tebbe would paint a picture and give everyone who attended the homecoming a chance to buy a raffle ticket to win his work of art. “This was the grand prize and as years went on, it became a drawing card for the annual Fryburg Homecoming,” Butcher said. “The only way a person could acquire one of Father Tebbe’s paintings was either by winning one at the homecoming, being a relative of Father Tebbe, or a parishioner or friend of his who helped him to complete one of his many projects. He never sold a painting. God gave him an artistic talent and thus he shared with us what he loved to do.” Tebbe is being remembered this year at Sunday’s 119th annual Fryburg Homecoming scheduled in part because the family of Betty and Gene Freisthler, who recently donated their painting painted by Tebbe back to the St. John Catholic Church Parish to be raffled off this year at the event. The oil on canvas painting entitled “Valley with Five Birds” measures 51- by 37-inches and is signed and dated 1969 by Tebbe, three years before his death. Information on the meaning of the painting and how the Freisthler family acquired will be shared with the parish and all attendees during the homecoming. “It is our desire that everyone understand how important Fryburg and our beloved old church is to all of us, and how be became the parish family we are today and plan to perpetuate for many years to come,” Butcher said. Raffle tickets for the painting are to be sold beginning at 4 p.m. the day of the homecoming, with the winning ticket to be drawn at 10 p.m. at the church. Tickets are six for $5 or a dollar each. “Proceeds from the painting will continue to support the St. John Catholic Church as we celebrate 159 years this year as a parish family,” Butcher said. “We are grateful to all who have come from God and returned to God for all their efforts to make our parish what it is today.” Aside from the special painting raffle drawing, other festivities also start start promptly at 4 p.m. including children’s rides and games, a kiddie tractor pull, hourly attendance raffle drawings (attendees must be present to win), craft wheel and special raffle stand, hog raffle, 50-50 raffle drawing, showdown poker and Bingo. As scheduled to appear this year will be Fryburg’s famous homemade mock turtle soup and chicken noodle soup, with hamburgers, tacos, ice cream and homemade pies also available for purchase. In addition, another raffle will be held at 11 p.m., with a grand prize of $1,000 awarded to the attendee with the winning ticket. Total cash prizes amounting to $6,150 will also be raffles off throughout the night with the winner needed not to be present to win. “The parish is very thankful to all our priests who have been here before and after Father Tebbe and we are thankful for the continuing support of our wonderful parishioners, friends of the parish and non-parishioners,” Butcher said. “Everyone is important in God’s eyes, whether they do small or large things, as it takes everybody working together to keep our church close knit and active. It requires the same effort needed to keep our own families together and happy. “We all do what we can to help each other out and that is what St. John Catholic Church and Fryburg is all about,” she said. “Even with the world today, with so many people losing their jobs, we are still a vibrant parish here in Fryburg.”
