Loaves of bread: Minister: Faith starts from a seed

Holding a loaf of fresh-baked bread, a local minister explained the similarities between a seed germinating in the soil which eventually is used to make bread and the growth of person in faith.
Incorporating the biblical passage of the mustard seed into the Lenten theme of “Be What You Are ...,” The Rev. Steve Nelson, pastor of First English Lutheran Church, discussed the three parts of the seed and compared each to a person and their faith.
Nelson explained a seed is composed of an embryo, a seed coat and food storage. He compared the embryo to a person’s faith and the food storage, which nourishes the embryo, to those people who have had an impact on a person’s life and faith.
He said the food storage permit the seed to break through the seed coat and break through the soil to become a plant.
The people, who he compared to food storage of a seed, assist with a person’s faith and are working to help them grow so they can grow, learn and pass the knowledge they obtain onto the next generation.
“The foundations of our faith have been built literally through the help of others who taught us about faith and what it meant to them,” Nelson said during the third week of Lenten Services. “The Holy Spirit works through others’ actions and that helps us to believe, too.”

Fourth of July a success for Grand Lake
Tuesday, 07 July 2009
By ANGELA WEAVER
Staff Writer
ST. MARYS — Grand Lake St. Marys State Park bustled with activity during the holiday weekend, as visitors came out to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Fourth of July.
Assistant Park Manager Brian Miller said the campground and the lake saw many visitors.
“We had a great weekend,” he said. “The campground was full.”
Miller noted the reserved sites at the campground were full before last week, the electric sites were full by July 1, and the non-electric campsites were full by Friday.
“We even overflowed into the group camping area,” Miller said.
The holiday weekend was also complete with fireworks over Grand Lake St. Marys on Saturday, Miller said.
“We were responsible for the fireworks,” he said. “It was the largest fireworks we’ve ever been involved with and it went well.”
Miller said the Freedom Days festival also went well and noted that the area received rain before and after the fireworks show.
He said the Saturday rain showers dampened boat traffic at night.
“We had a fair amount of boat traffic and the rain made an impact,” he said.
During the day on the weekend, Miller said he saw a lot of visitors utilizing the park.
The park officers also offered their naturalist programs with evening movies, safety programs and crafts.
“The day use was very good,” he said. “The boat traffic was good, the shelter houses were full.”
Miller said area officers had no problems on the lake during the holiday weekend.
“It was a good, safe weekend,” he said. “We had watercraft and park officers on patrol during the day and night.”
Area anglers also took advantage of the weekend, Miller said, noting he saw a few anglers out along the lake.
“There were some people catfishing,” he said. “I did notice a few anglers between the spillway fishing and having successful catches of walleye.”
This weekend, Miller said the park does not have any events planned, but he is hoping for another successful weekend.
“Everything was good,” he said. “It was a good weekend with a lot of people using the lake. I’m hoping again for the weather to hold out and have another busy weekend this weekend.”
The state park’s annual Christmas in July event is scheduled for July 18 and 19, when Santa Claus will make his yearly visit to Grand Lake St. Marys.
