A winter snow storm, which dumped as much as 3 feet in the Washington, D.C. area, hit the area with as much as 9 inches of snow in Wapakoneta and some areas of Auglaize County.
The snowfall came with high winds which created drifts as tall as 4 feet causing hazards for the city and county roadways.
Wapakoneta weather observer Dan Dietz calculated 8.5 inches of snow fell in Wapakoneta Friday and Saturday. The National Weather Service is predicting as much as 10 more inches starting with a light snow at midnight with most of the snow falling throughout the day Tuesday before tapering off early Wednesday morning.
Wapakoneta Public Works Superintendent Meril Simpson said city crews hit the roads at 4 a.m. Saturday, but the high winds hampered their effforts.
Crews worked until 4:15 p.m.. Saturday and returned Sunday and worked from 7 a.m. to 1p.m. before heading back out early this morning.
“We are attempting to clear the roadways the best we can and we are dumping more salt and grit this time,” Simpson said this morning. “The temperature is still too cold for the salt to work, but if we get enough sun it may warm it up enough to help.”

Eight teens caught with alcohol

Eight teens may face charges for underage alcohol consumption after they were found at a Wapakoneta motel drinking.
Wapakoneta Police Chief Dave Webb said an officer on patrol noticed some suspicious activity outside of the Western Inn, 13 Apollo Drive, and located the juveniles and one 21-year-old Wapakoneta male inside the room with a large amount of alcohol.
The juveniles included a 16-year-old male from Rockford, a 17-year-old male from Celina, a 16-year-old male from Celina, a 17-year-old male from Wapakoneta, a 18-year-old female from Celina, a 16-year-old Coldwater female, and two 14-year-old Celina females.
Prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office are reviewing the case for possible underage consumption charges and the adult for charges of furnishing the alcohol.

Officers assisted troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol at 1:40 a.m. Saturday after a juvenile was found to be inside a vehicle stopped for a routine traffic violation.
According to the report:
The vehicle was stopped in the 500 block of Murray Street.
The 15-year-old Wapakoneta female inside not only was out after curfew, but may face charges of underage consumption of alcohol and possession of tobacco. She was released to her parents.
Prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office are reviewing the case for possible charges.
• Four juveniles located at Middle and Wentz streets at 4 a.m. Saturday by troopers were released to their parents.
According to the report:
The juveniles, all of Wapakoneta, included two males 16 and 17 and two females 13 and 15.
No alcohol or anything else appeared to be involved.
Prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office are reviewing the case for possible curfew violation charges.
• Troopers requested assistance with a traffic stop at 305 W. Mechanic St. at 4:10 a.m. Saturday after it appeared the woman stopped had been assaulted earlier.
According to the report:
The woman had gotten into a fight in the parking lot across from Lulu’s at 1:30 a.m. and though it appeared she may have some injuries from that, she said the argument with one of the guys she is dating was not physical.
• A passenger in a vehicle stopped for a routine traffic violation at the intersection Bellefontaine Street and Rauthland Avenue at 11:05 p.m. Saturday was arrested for underage consumption.
According to the report:
Jeremy Leonard, 18, 508 Lima St., tested 0.147 on an alcohol breathalyzer. The legal limit is 0.08.
He was transported to the Auglaize County Jail after he said there was no one local to whom he could be released.
He refused to say where he had been drinking.
