By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer KALIDA — Spurted by an early run in the first quarter, the Wapakoneta girls varsity basketball team cruised to a win over the Kalida Wildcats in the teams first ever meeting Saturday afternoon. “I’m really pleased with the way the girls played,” said Wapakoneta varsity coach Brad Rex after the Redskins’ 49-37 road win.
Kalida outshot the Redskins from the field in the first quarter making 4-of-13, but Wapakoneta took an 11-8 lead after the first eight minutes thanks to free throws by Devon Golden, Lindsey Kentner and Heidi Schlegel. Kentner, who was the only Redskin in double figures Saturday, closed out the first half scoring converting both ends of a two-shot foul opportunity. The Redskins ended the initial half with a 13-point advantage. Despite the cushion, the Redskins came out in the second half and continued where they left off — with solid play and timely baskets. By the end of the third period, Wapakoneta held a 17-point lead and two minutes into the final period increased the lead to 22 points, the biggest advantage Wapakoneta held. By the fourth quarter, Rex cleared the bench and even though Kalida was able to close the gap to 12, the bench players contributed with solid play to help the Redskins put the game away. Kentner led all scorers Saturday scoring a game high 16 points. Kalida was led by sophomore Ashley Heitmeyer who scored 12 and senior Megan Hamburg who contributed 11 for the Wildcats who drop to 2-8. Wapakoneta goes to 8-2 at the half way point of the season. The Wapakoneta junior varsity took the opener 27-25, leading the entire game. Kailey Schneider and Emily Lowry paced the Redskin reserves with five points each. The JV improved to 6-4 on the year. Wapakoneta will be back in action Thursday when the Redskins travel to St. Marys to take on the Roughriders in a Western Buckeye League game. The JV game tips off at 6 p.m. |
