Past to future: Wintzer Co. finds artifacts during build

Few people exhibit an enthusiasm about historical artifacts as Jim Bowsher does.
When crews working for G.A. Wintzer and Son Co. started working to build new office space on West Auglaize Street, they came across some interesting finds where a rental home had previously sat.
Jim Kent and others of Kent Surveying began finding pieces of artifacts. They called in local history buff, Bowsher, to try to figure out what the bits and pieces meant.

Buckland prepares for parade
Friday, 15 May 2009
By MATT NICHOLS
Staff Writer
BUCKLAND — When Memorial Day swings by this year, a small Auglaize County village will once again swell in size as hundreds from across the area congregate to pay tribute to all those who have served.
The Memorial Day Parade in the village of Buckland is set for its annual return at 10 a.m. May 25. Buckland Mayor Dan Lambert said as many as 40 units are to take part in the festivities which winds down Main Street before ending at the cemetery for a ceremony to honor area veterans.
Lambert said he is awestruck when he sees how his village is transformed for those few hours on Memorial Day.
“It’s kind of an amazing thing really,” Lambert said. “There’s no one in town at about 9 a.m. and there’s no one here at around 1 p.m., but between those times there is an upheaval of people and it’s amazing to see how many gather in the town.”
Lambert along with the Revs. Sue Keller, from the Buckland United Church of Christ, and Brad Colley, from the Bethelhem Christian Union Church, are scheduled to address those attending the Memorial Day service in the cemetery.
Lambert said chicken dinners will also be sold for $7 per dinner. In past years, the village typically sold more than 1,500 dinners during the event.
During Monday’s Buckland Village Council meeting, councilors passed a resolution allowing the Buckland Police Department to purchase a light bar with strobe light for their police vehicle.
Councilors also approved Doug Slattery to paint the fire department’s three overhead garage doors as well as the bus garage.
