By MATT NICHOLS Staff Writer The Wapakoneta Daily News, along with four other Ohio newspapers were named the best in the state Sunday in the annual Associated Press Society of Ohio newspaper competition. The Wapakoneta Daily News received the 2008 General Excellence award for newspapers with a daily circulation of up to 7,999 people. It is the first time the newspaper has been bestowed the honor. Wapakoneta Daily News Publisher Dianna Epperly said the award stems from the newspaper’s longstanding devotion to the events and people within the city. “Hard work pays off and you want to give back to the community,” Epperly said. “We care about Wapakoneta, and what we call home.”
The Daily News Printing Company began printing the Wapakoneta Daily News in July, 1905, and today, the company employs 57 part- and full-time workers. Epperly said she was pleased to the efforts from the staff pay off with the AP’s honor. “It’s a nice pat on the back for some very hardworking people,” Epperly said. The Wapakoneta Daily News staff includes Managing Editor William Laney, Assistant Managing Editor Karen Campbell, Sports Editor Chris Voloschuk and staff writers Matt Nichols and Krista Hayes. The Wapakoneta Daily News submitted four newspapers to be judged including the Nov. 5 election edition. The staff also submitted their coverage of the February floods, which garnered the newspaper a second place in “Best Breaking News.” The staff won “Best Explanatory Reporting” for its series in October on “Mysteries Explained.” Campbell won an individual award as third best feature writer in the “Best Feature Writer” for the division.s General Excellence awards for 2008 also went to The Columbus Dispatch, The (Canton) Repository, the Sandusky Register and The Marietta Times. The Cincinnati Enquirer won the First Amendment Award for outstanding accomplishment in pursuing freedom of information with its campaign to show how society could be affected by restricted access to public information. Sixty-six daily newspapers submitted 2,908 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2008. The Associated Press is a not-for-profit news cooperative representing 1,500 newspapers. and 5,000 broadcast stations in the United States. Members of AP include 88 daily newspapers in Ohio.
