By PHIL McLEAN Staff Writer FORT RECOVERY — A 9-point run at the end of the third by the Fort Recovery helped the Indians hold off the Wapakoneta Redskins in girls varsity basketball action Thursday. Redskin Devon Golden gave Wapakoneta its only lead at 24-23 early in the third quarter, before the Indians started their 9-point run midway through the quarter to give Fort Recovery a 46-39 win in non-league play.
“I saw them play Marion Local and I asked myself, ‘how are we going to defend against them,’” Indians varsity coach Jeff Roessner said after his team improved to 8-0 on the season. “We had open shots, we just couldn’t convert,” said Wapakoneta varsity coach Brad Rex, who watched the Redskins slip to 7-2 on the year. Many of those shots came at the free-throw line, where the Redskins shot 34 times. The team converted 16, or 47 percent, of the shots. During the last minute of play, the Indians converted 5-of-6 from the free-throw line to win the game, while Wapakoneta made 1-of-2 during the same stretch of play. “These were two very good teams,” Roessner said. “They both competed real, real well.” The Redskins Lindsey Kentner, the school’s leading scorer in basketball, took home game-high scoring honors with 13 points. Sara Fortkamp scored 12 points and Stein contributed 10 points for the Indians. Fort Recovery took an early lead in the game, extending its advantage to 5 points with a little more than 2 minutes left in the first period. Wapakoneta managed to close the gap to 13-12 by the end of the first period. A 3-point goal by Brittany Duff tied the game at 15 early in second quarter, but Fort Recovery pulled away and held a 21-17 advantage at the half-time break. Wapakoneta knotted the score at 23, approximately 2 minutes into the third period on a field goal by Kentner and took a short-lived lead when Golden hit the second of two free throws. The Wapakoneta junior varsity came from behind to take a 45-43 victory over the Indian reserves. The Redskins junior varsity improved to 5-4 on the year. Emily Lowry paced the Redskins with 10 points. Fort Recovery is scheduled to host Fort Loramie at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Redskins are scheduled to travel to Kalida for a non-league game, with the junior varsity game set to begin at noon. The reserve game gets underway at noon.
