Past to future: Wintzer Co. finds artifacts during build

 Image

By JENNIFER TANGEMAN

Few people exhibit an enthusiasm about historical artifacts as Jim Bowsher does.
When crews working for G.A. Wintzer and Son Co. started working to build new office space on West Auglaize Street, they came across some interesting finds where a rental home had previously sat.
Jim Kent and others of Kent Surveying began finding pieces of artifacts. They called in local history buff, Bowsher, to try to figure out what the bits and pieces meant.

Cook-off to benefit FOP kids program
Wednesday, 15 April 2009
By KAREN CAMPBELL
Assistant Managing Editor
Wapakoneta service clubs are facing off in a chili cook-off Friday night to raise money to buy presents for area children.
With proceeds to benefit the Auglaize County Fraternal Order of Police’s annual Shop with a Cop, the Knights of Columbus sponsored chili cook-off starts at 6 p.m. Friday at the K of C, 614 County Road 25A North.
Eleven teams plan to participate in the cook-off, in its second year, said Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office Detective Sgt. Jerry Sawmiller, who serves as spokesman for the FOP.
Those wanting to try the chili need only pay a $5 admission price to try a sample cup of each kind made by groups representing organizations such as the AMVETS (American Veterans), American Legion, K of C, Sertoma and Brands Lake.
The chili is being judged in two categories — People’s Choice and by a five-judge panel of FOP members.
Other food also is to be available for purchase.
Proceeds benefit the Shop with a Cop program, for which law enforcement officers take under privileged children shopping for Christmas. The program is in its 15th year.
Last year, in one of its biggest years, more than 100 children, ages 2 through 12, received presents through the program.
“This is a very significant fundraiser for us,” Sawmiller said, mentioning that in its first year it brought in $1,500 to the program. “There are a lot of parents and children out there in need. Mostly we purchased clothing for them.
“This is a way we can come out and do something for members of the community unable to help themselves,” he said.
