Two Wapakoneta High School seniors recently received top honors and are being recognized for their academic achievements.
Chris Schwartz and Joey Jose have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Approximately 34,000 commended students throughout the nation are being recognized for this honor.
Schwartz and Jose placed in the top 5 percent among more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).
These two students have been recognized for their exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their outstanding performance on the qualifying test used for program entry.
âItâs good,â Schwartz said of the achievement. âI was hoping for it and it was nice to achieve something.â
After high school, Schwartz plans on attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.
âI wanted to serve my country and it seemed like a good fit because of the regiment style,â the son of Laura and Brent Schwartz said.
Schwartz plans to earn a doctorate degree in mathematics and his ideal job would be to develop weapons for the military.
Currently, Schwartz is the president of the National Honor Society, a class officer, an Eagle Scout and a member of the varsity football team.
Schwartz and Jose took the PSAT test in October 2010.
Jose said he also was proud of their honors.
âThis is such an accomplishment,â Jose said.
After high school, Jose plans to attend a 4-year university and then attend medical school.
Joseâs father is a local physician and his fatherâs work inspired him to follow this career path.
The son of Priya and Dr. Mathew Jose plays soccer and tennis at Wapakoneta High School.
âThe young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,â a spokesperson from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation said in a news release. âThese students represent a valuable national resource, recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to advancement of educational excellence in our nation.
âWe hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.â
