Long-time business owners Linda and Scott Kuenning, of New Bremen, have enjoyed success running the family business, True Value Western Ohio Hardware, for 25 years from their stores in Minster and St. Henry.
The couple now plans to extend their services to the Wapakoneta area.
The Kuennings plan to open a third store at 811 Defiance St. in the Grandview Plaza in the former location of Coast to Coast in March.
“We want to bring that good ole’ fashioned hardware store with customer service to Wapakoneta,” Linda Kuenning said, “and still have the conveniences of modern day.”
Kuenning said she and her husband searched within a 50-mile radius and did market studies to find a good small town to open their third store.
“We looked for available space and the willingness of a landlord to adapt to our needs, among other things,” Kuenning said. “We have had several people come to us and say, ‘You need to bring a store to Wapakoneta.’ ”
The Kuennings first took over the Minster store in 1987, which was originally opened in 1953 by Scott’s parents, Dona Mae and Stan Kuenning.
The business will likely stay family-owned for many more years, as all four of their sons are all active in the business.
They later on opened the second location in St. Henry.
Kuenning said the company will offer the basic core of all hardware department stores, including fasteners, electrical, plumbing and painting items. The store will also offer Carhartt work ware, lawn and garden items and supplies, pet supplies, farm and ranch, automotive, and cleaning supplies and housewares. Rental equipment for do-it-yourselfers.
Kuenning said she has business roots in the area. Her great-great-great uncle, Michael Brown, owned and operated the Bent Wood Churn Co. under the auspices of the M. Brown and Co. in Wapakoneta.
Remodeling is presently being done in the store and the Kuennings plan for a March 1 opening date. A grand opening will be celebrated April 5-7.
Store hours will be from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
