The Botkins Trojans held off the Casstown Miami East Vikings as long as they could Thursday but a Vikings’ goal with three minutes left in the second overtime ended the match, giving Miami East a 1-0 victory in a Division IV Southwest District girls soccer sectional championship in Casstown.

The two teams played scoreless through 80 regulation minutes and 15 minutes in the first overtime before the Vikings’ winning goal surfaced from a rebound off of a direct kick.

“It was tough,” Botkins varsity coach Joe Welker said. “We were so physically and mentally drained. The girls were upset but we walked off the field proud.”

Welker mentioned that Miami East (13-2-2) barely celebrated after Thursday’s match, knowing Botkins had just given them all they could handle.

The Trojans employed a defensive-first mindset Thursday.

“We stayed back defensively and didn’t have a whole lot of offense,” Welker said. “We stayed in the game with it though. We stayed strong.”

Despite the loss, Welker felt it might have been the team’s best match of the season.

“Everybody stepped and had one of their best games,” Welker said. “We gave it the best we could and we came up short.”

Keirstyn Rogers had 18 steals and nine saves Thurday for Botkins.

Brooke Bornhorst collected 15 steals. Michaela Kramer and Whitney Bornhorst added 10 steals each.

The Trojans’ match Thursday was the final one in the careers of seniors Gavrielle Woodruff, Shelby Boyd, Emily Brown, Carly Harshbarger and Kramer.

The loss ended Botkins’ season at 5-7-5 overall.

The Trojans were 0-6-2 to begin the season but went undefeated in their next eight matches before Thursday’s loss.

Miami East, with its win Thursday, advanced to the district level where it face the Lehman Catholic Cavaliers at 7 p.m. Monday at Fairborn.
