Sylvia L. Engel, 88

Sylvia L. Engel, 88, of St. Marys, died at 8:07 p.m. on Monday, May 5, 2014, at St. Marys Living Center, with her children at her bedside. She was born April 20, 1926, in St Marys, to Raymond and Leila (Jacoby) Haseker. On Oct. 8, 1947, at St. Paul’s E & R Church in St. Marys, she married Donald L. Engel, who died Dec. 5, 2010.

Survivors include, son, Randolph (Jill) Engel, of Celina, daughter, Adele (Gerald Freewalt) Fast, of St. Marys; two grandsons, Dr. Trenton (Bridget) Engel, of Denver, Colo., Eric Fast,  of Orlando, Fla.; three step-grandchildren, Kyle Menchofer, of Celina, Kami (Brandon) Wilson, of Newport, N.C., Ann (Sam) Li, of Celina; two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Alexis Engel; five step-great-grandchildren, Charli and Tavian Wilson, Ethan, Carter and Myah Li; sister, Doris (David) Lawrence, of Toledo.

She was preceded in death by parents, Raymond and Leila Haseker, husband, Donald Engel, and brother, Louis Haseker.

She was a graduate of St. Marys Memorial High School (class of 1944) and Frederick’s Beauty Academy in Lima. A licensed hairdresser, she operated Sylvia’s Beauty Shop in St. Marys for 43 years. She was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ and its women’s guild, Hawthorne Chapter #119 OES, NW Ohio Hairdressers’ Association and National Cosmetology Association. Her favorite pastimes included reading and playing cards.

Rites are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m., Friday, May 9, 2014, at Miller-Long & Folk Funeral Home (314 W. high Street Chapel) in St. Marys, with the Rev. Dr. Ed Bray officiating. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in St. Marys. Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Thursday, at the funeral home on High Street. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul’s UCC.
