SWIMMING: Miller advances to final

February 24, 2012

CANTON — Two one-hundredths of a second.

That was all the cushion Wapakoneta Redskins freshman Josie Miller needed to advance the finals of the girls 50-yard freestyle in the Division II state swimming meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

It was also all she needed to guarantee her spot in Redskins history as the only Wapakoneta individual swimmer to reach the medal stand at the state meet.

In the preliminary race on Thursday, Miller swam a 24.43 for the eighth fastest time of the day.

Her time was .03 faster than her qualifying time from the district meet last week and reset her own previously held school record in the event.

Miller knocked seniors Lori Davis (Granville) and Mackenzie Harris (Hawken) off the medal stand.  Davis and Harris both posted times of 24.45 and were relegated to the B-final.

The swimmers with the top eight times from Thursday’s preliminaries will compete in the A-final tonight.  Final races start at 5 p.m.

In the boys 100 backstroke, Redskins senior Ryan Kremer swam a 56.89, the 23rd fastest time of the day.  Kremer came into the event as the No. 23 seed with a qualifying time of 56.53.

Kremer was only the third boy in school history to qualify for the state meet in an individual event.

The state finals begin at 5 p.m. today.  Live results will be posted online at www.ohsaa.org.

The Wapakoneta Daily News will also post Miller’s result on Twitter — @WDN_Sports — as soon as it is available.
