As part of National Children’s Dental Health Month, Wapakoneta Elementary School brought in a dental hygienist to teach second-graders about the importance of oral health.

Dental Hygienist Rita Anderson, who works in Dr. Barry Aab’s Office at Auglaize Dental Associates LLC, spoke to four classrooms of second-graders about what foods they should and shouldn’t eat, how to properly brush their teeth, and took them through the process of a dental appointment.

Anderson told the students about the adverse effect that eating a lot of sugary foods can have on their teeth, and encouraged them to eat a lot of healthy food like fruits and vegetables. She also discussed cavities and what students can do to avoid them.

She then used a large toothbrush and a stuffed alligator to demonstrate to the children how they are supposed to brush their teeth, and the students took turns practicing proper brushing methods.
