BOTKINS — Botkins Middle School seventh-grader Micah Smock says he likes being a well-rounded person. He demonstrates those interests in the activities he.

“My mom and dad push me to succeed,” the son of Mary Lee and Phil Smock said.

Smock is learning to succeed early in life. He is a was a center-forward on the seventh-grade basketball team. He was a defender on the soccer team.

He motored out a personal best 12:04 in cross country, and placed fifth in the county in the 110 meter hurdles and was a member of the fourth place 1,600 relay team.

All while maintaining a 4.0 grade point average.

Despite all of his activities at school, it is a non-scholastic activity that ties up most of Micah’s time.

He is a member of the Botkins

Livestock 4-H club and has developed into quite the showman.

He was “Junior Showman of the Year” last year at the state fair with hogs and is looking forward to another successful year this year.

“It keeps you busy pretty much all year round,” Smock said. “It will take up my whole summer. I will go to two shows in Louisville, Ky., and then there will be the county and state fairs.”

Smock will also be looking to defend his “Showman of the Year” award from the county fair. In addition to hogs, Smock also shows cattle.

It is this activity that has steered Smock toward a career path. He would like to be a veterinarian and would like to specialize in large animals.

“I live on a farm and I like being around animals,” Smock said. “When one of our animals gets hurt, I watch and observe as it gets taken care of. I think it is interesting. That is what I want to do.”

Smock said he will attend college most likely at Ohio State University or Wilmington College.

In his spare time, Micah likes to play air-soft gun battles with his two brothers, Conner, 9, and John, 8.

“I usually win,” Smock said, “but Conner is getting better.”
