St. Marys men seriously injured in crash

November 7, 2011

Two St. Marys men were flown to a Dayton area hospital after a crash early Monday morning at the intersection of Glynwood Road and Ohio 116.
Garet Schmehl, 20, 17906 State Route 66, St. Marys, who was driving, and a passenger, Jeremy Robinson, 20, of 821 Motz St., St. Marys, were both transported from the site of the crash by St. Marys EMS to Joint Township District Memorial Hospital, in St. Marys.
From there they were flown by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton after the 1:20 a.m. Noble Township crash, said Sgt. Brian Jordan, of the Wapakoneta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
Tuesday morning Schmehl remained in critical condition and Robinson in fair condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman and the trooper investigating the crash for the Highway Patrol.
According to a report from the post, Garet Schmehl was driving east on Glynwood Road when he failed to yield at a posted stop sign at Ohio 116 and lost control of the vehicle while traveling over a slight hill at the intersection.
Schmehl's vehicle traveled off the right edge of the road going into a slide before hitting the end of a guardrail, which caused the vehicle to go airborne over a creek and then strike several trees and a steel post on the opposite bank. The vehicle overturned several times before coming to rest on its wheels.
The motorist was wearing a seatbelt and had to be extracted from the vehicle by mechanical means, while the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt and was freed from the vehicle using nonmechanical means. Both were listed as suffering incapacitating injuries.
Jordan said speed is thought to have been a factor in the crash according to witness statements. The posted speed limit is 55 mph and Schmehl was listed as driving 85 mph at the time of the crash.
Alcohol does not appear to have been a factor in the crash. The administration of a test was not listed in the most recent report from the Highway Patrol.
The vehicle, owned by Tony Schmehl, of the same St. Marys address, was listed as sustaining severe damage.
