Snow rollers: natural phenomena

January 29, 2014

“I went to this house just north of me and there were three of them laying out in the field with nothing around, they had to be made. … like they say it’s a natural phenomenon,” Hampp said. (Staff photo/Michelle Meunier)

Snow rollers, seen along Dixie Highway north of Wapakoneta, are a rare, natural phenomena, according to the National Weather Service, that require the right mix of snow, wind and cold. The snow must be icy and crunchy underfoot and falling snow cannot stick to the lower layer for them to occur.

Wendell Hampp, 91, has lived in the area since 1940 and said he has never seen anything like it.
