UNIOPOLIS — The Union Township trustees approved a contract with the village of Uniopolis to do snow removal in the village on a temporary basis as a vote to unincorporate the village approaches in November.
The village ordinarily contracted with a company on an annual basis to perform the work, but Uniopolis Village Council members decided not to enter a contract this year with the possible dissolving of the village pending in November. Two Uniopolis councilors submitted petitions to the full council in June with 75 signatures to put the unincorporation, or to dissolve the village, up for a village-wide vote.
To be placed on the ballot, 37 signatures from village residents was needed. The petitions were verified just a few days later by the Auglaize County Election Board.
Councilors decided to put the issue to ballot due to budget cutbacks which they say have caused the village to not have enough money to operate.
The township will cover the village’s approximate four miles of roadway for the snow removal over the next two months at a cost of $250 per trip.
The village faces a possible time delay on dissolving the village into the new year due to a final audit before the village finally “closes” its books. Trustee Kelly Knutzen said the township would likely enter another temporary contract with the village to cover snow removal into the new year until the audit is complete. The township will automatically take over governing powers in the township if voters choose to unincorporate the village.
