Showtime for lamb
A 16-year-old New Bremen resident and a 17-year-old who lives near Botkins were crowned Showman of Showmen and Market Lamb Grand Champion at the Auglaize County Fair’s Junior Fair Lamb Show Tuesday night.
Deion Hoehne, an incoming junior at New Bremen High School, was crowned Showman of Showmen after he competed in the showmanship portion of Tuesday’s lamb show. Grand champion of the market lamb competition was Whitney Bornhorst, who will be a senior at Botkins High School this upcoming school year.
“I was really excited when the judge told me I was the winner,” Hoehne said. “It’s one of the biggest accomplishments of my life.”
Hoehne said he started becoming interested in showing animals at age 7. When he was 9 years old he was able to start competing in county fairs and has been doing so ever since.
“For me it’s like a hobby and it teaches me responsibility,” he said. “It’s also fun and it’s what I like to do.”
Bornhorst was also 7 years old when she began raising animals, but for the past several years she has exclusively shown pigs at the fair. Tuesday’s competition was her first attempt at showing lambs.
“I’ve always kind of wanted to show lambs, so I decided this was the year,” she said.
