Showing 'Skins spirit

September 15, 2011

Brent Schwartz and Roger Smith spray paint a “W” on a sidewalk at the Wapakoneta High School.

For some, the mark of a Wapakoneta Redskin fan is easy to identify.
On some portion of the asphalt or concrete at a home or business, the familiar Wapakoneta logo, a “W” with an arrow through the capital letter, can be purchased to show a fan’s support for the Redskins.
“If they are interested, they can call and we will either set up a time or if they leave a message we will call them about setting up a time to put the logo at their house or business,” Laura Schwartz told the Wapakoneta Daily News. “The money from the ‘W’ goes to the Wapakoneta Athletic Boosters which is used for the student-athletes.”
People interested in having the “W” mark a driveway or sidewalk at their house can call Laura and Brent Schwartz at 419-739-7388 or Julie and Roger Smith at 419-738-4650. The charge is $20 for a new “W” and $10 to refresh an existing “W.”
The crews paint a red “W” with a black arrow on concrete and a red “W” with a white arrow on asphalt. They paint the Wapakoneta Redskin logo by appointment, weather permitting. The next week is supposed to mild with several days of sunshine.
They typically paint the logo on the center of the driveway or on the sidewalk to a person’s home.
“This is to show support for any sport — fall, winter or spring,” Schwartz said. “Our hope is that everybody will support are school sports, the athletic department and most importantly, the student-athletes.”
Wapakoneta Redskin varsity football coach Doug Frye will present members of the 2011 Redskin football team and give a pep speech about the homecoming game against the Celina Bulldogs at Harmon Field at 7:45 p.m. today with a bonfire to start at approximately at 8 p.m. or when the pep rally at the field is complete.
The football game is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Friday with the homecoming king and queen to be announced after a ceremony starting at 6:50 p.m. Friday.
