The Wapakoneta Redskins opened their regular season with a 4-1 win Saturday over the Ottoville Big Green in a non-league varsity girls soccer game in Ottoville.

Wapak senior Mackenzie Custer manufactured two of the team’s four goals Saturday, while senior Sara Warner and sophomore Brianna Pequignot each had one goal.

The Redskins entered Saturday’s game without juniors Carly Jarvis, Leah Schattschneider, Haley McBride and freshman Claire Burton. Jarvis was a third-team All-Western Buckeye League selection last season, and Schattschneider is a returning letterwinner.

“We are basically playing without some key people who are out with injuries right now. Those injuries considered, people are out of position, and we don’t have depth normally have,” Wapak varsity coach Ross Kantner said. “I’m pretty happy overall. I’m happy with how they handled it.”

The Redskins outshot Ottoville, 17-1, on Saturday.

Kantner felt conditioning was a huge factor in Saturday’s match.

“We hustled all over the field,” Kantner said. “Our conditioning paid off. The kids could see what the last two-and-a-half weeks was for. We had kids who basically played the whole game. We were in a lot better shape than Ottoville.”

The Redskins are now 1-0-0 this season.

Wapak will return to the field at approximately 5 p.m. Monday with another non-league game against Fort Jennings.
