Sheriff warns of scam on Facebook

December 5, 2013

Auglaize County Sheriff Al Solomon, in conjunction with the Wapakoneta and St. Marys police departments, released an advisory concerning a posting on a local Facebook page.
The Facebook page is for posting items for sale in an online format called “Rummage Sale.”
Yesterday morning the three agencies started receiving complaints from residents concerning a posting on the Rummage Sale page of prescription medications for sale.
An investigation into the complaints discovered that the seller was requesting funds be sent to an out of state location, and the seller is not a local person. It is believed that the seller is actually trying to extort money from individuals and does not actually have any drugs to sell, even though this type of transaction is illegal in itself.
The seller is merely trying to use the allure of purchasing these medications as a scam to steal money from prospective purchasers.
Local law enforcement would like to remind residents that it is unlawful to purchase medications in this manner.
