Serving up chili

February 17, 2012

The Wapakoneta Sertoma Club held their 37th annual chili supper Thursday and a large turnout resulted from their efforts.

By 1:30 p.m., club workers had already put in a busy day as more than 400 people had come through for lunch. They expected to reach a minimum of 1,000 to 1,200 people by closing time 7 p.m. and hoped to match their annual crowd of approximately 1,300.

“The cooks were in at 5 p.m. (Wednesday) and they cooked until 9 p.m. getting ready for today,” club member Tom Hunter said.

Another club member, Alan Davis, said the event was the largest fundraiser for the club each year. The club raised a little more than $11,000 last year for its charity.

Davis said the club’s primary focus is helping children with speech and hearing problems.

“We are also involved with many other community things,” Davis said. “We support the YMCA, the schools, the Wapak WaterPark, recreational league teams and the Shriner’s Hospital. This is our largest fundraiser to help do those projects.”

Davis said the club’s efforts have helped provide help to people throughout the community.

“We have been able to help many, many people through the years,” Davis said.
