As a way of helping keep seniors involved in the community, the Auglaize County Council on Aging provides a senior center where the focus is socialization.

Through events like bingo, guest speakers and other forms of entertainment, seniors are able to get out of the house and enjoy some of the things the community has to offer.

The ACCA Activities Director Sandy Stanfield gave Wapakoneta High School’s show choir director Tim Smith a call to set up a chance for the seniors to see the Wapakoneta Singsation perform. That performance took place yesterday morning in the performing arts center at 10:30 a.m.

Stanfield said a lot of seniors don’t get the opportunity to get out as much, and that is what the senior center is for.

“A lot of our seniors are stuck home by themselves a lot, and when they get out they can socialize and this is working out great,” Stanfield said. “On Mondays we average about 50 people and we’re meeting at the Y right now. It’s just good socialization for everybody.”

Stanfield works to set up different opportunities for entertainment for the seniors.

“We’ve been working on having like once a month some kind of entertainment coming into the center,” Stanfield said. “But he (Smith) said it would be better if we came here because of all of the costume changes and everything.”
