Second memorial golf outing planned to raise money for scholarship fund
Family and friends of a Wapakoneta teenager who died after a seven-year battle with brain cancer are continuing with a golf outing to raise money for a scholarship in his name.
The second-ever Jason Strauser Memorial Golf Outing is planned for Saturday at Prairie View Golf Club, outside of Waynesfield. This year the main fundraiser for the scholarship fund in Jason’s name also is to feature bingo, chicken dinners, auctions and 50/50 and door prize drawings.
Money raised from the first such outing last year allowed the family to present six $1,000 scholarships to needy and deserving seniors who would have graduated with Jason as part of the Wapakoneta High School class of 2012 this year.
“We are hoping to continue our outing and scholarship fund until we can no longer do it,” Jason’s mom, Judy Strauser said. “With a lot of help from our families, friends and the community, we can’t go wrong. We are truly surrounded by very kind, generous people.”
Erin Fisher, a friend of Jason’s who came up with the idea for the first golf outing last year, said she thought it might be a good way for the scholarship fund to raise money and something she wanted to help do because Jason was always giving to others.
She said she knew giving scholarships to students would have been something Jason would have liked to be able to do.
Last year, the golf outing raised $10,000 for the scholarship fund and the Strausers are hoping for even more this year.
“We want to continue to be able to help youth in the community in Jason’s name,” Judy Strauser said. She said initially they had no idea a golf outing would be such a success, but they are very thankful.
“I always feel like something good has to come out of this horrible thing,” Strauser said. “It just has to. We want to celebrate his life.”
• The second annual Jason Strauser Memorial Golf Outing is planned for Saturday at Prairie View Golf Club, outside of Waynesfield. The outing is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. with a shot gun start followed by a few words from Prairie View Owner Doug Spencer and Strauser’s parents. This year, the outing also is adding bingo in the clubhouse for the non-golfers. The cost is 25 cents per card or five for $1.
There is still time to sign up as a team or individual by calling Doug Spencer at Prairie View at 419-568-7888 or Judy Strauser at 419-738-7386.
Chicken dinners, included in the $50 golf fee along with a cart, are to be served beginning at 11 a.m. Individual dinners are to be for sale for $7 for half a chicken, a baked potato, green beans, a roll and butter.
The Strausers invite everyone out to either play golf, play bingo or eat chicken.
Golfers have the chance to earn prizes by the hole, but there also will be 50/50 and door prizes, and a television, fabricated supersize Ohio State University fire ring and other items auctioned during the event.
All proceeds go to the Jason Strauser Memorial Scholarship fund.
