Superintendent Keith Horner
School fees for most elementary grades in the Wapakoneta City Schools are increasing this year.
For kindergarten, the $39 fee marks a $4 increase, for first grade the fee decreased by $10 to $59, the second grade fee increased $5 to $70, the third grade fee increased by $7 to $70, and the fourth-grade fee increased by $19 to $52.
“They are changing,” Superintendent Keith Horner said of the fees approved unanimously by members of the Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education this week.
He said Wapakoneta Middle School fees are $40 each for fifth- and sixth-grades and $50 for seventh-grade.
High school fees vary depending on a student’s class schedule.
Horner described changes in fees at both of those levels as being “not dramatic.” He noted that 40 percent of the district’s population is exempt from paying the fees due to household incomes. Those receiving free lunch are not required to pay anything toward the fees.
“For the fees, we go through and itemize things, consumable items, workbooks,” Horner said. “We are not charging all that we are permitted to charge for the fees. We are trying to be somewhat sensitive.”
An itemized list of what was included in the fees was not available.
While parents may be seeing an increase in prices for academics, they are not expected to see one for meals for the 2011-12 school year.
Lunch and breakfast prices also were approved this week for the school year and remain the same as last school year.
Breakfast for elementary students if $1.20, $1.45 for middle school students, and $1.55 for high school students. Reduced breakfast prices are 30 cents.
Lunch is $2.35 for elementary students, $2.50 for middle school students, and $2.60 for high school students. Reduced lunch prices are 40 cents.
Adults are to pay $3 for lunch.
