After seven weeks of training, 23 Wapakoneta women whose age ranged from 11 to 78 years old accomplished the goal they set for themselves back in April: to complete a 5k race.
The Neon Rush 5k, which took place Monday night in Wapakoneta, was the final run for the group who called themselves the “Asphalt Angels.”
The group began the race in the parking lot of the Wapakoneta City Schools Administration Building and ran 3.1 miles through the streets of a surrounding neighborhood.
Making up the Asphalt Angels were beginning runners who signed up for a program called Couch to 5k, a running class offered through the YMCA and led by class instructor Judi Bailey.
“To see people go from wanting to lay on the sidewalk week one to doing this 5k, it’s absolutely incredible,” Bailey said.
