Robert Springer, 95
Robert W. Springer 95, of Wapakoneta, died at 10:05 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, 2012, at Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Marys.
He was born Sept. 29, 1916, in St. Marys, the son of Kathryn (Makley) and Clarence W. Springer, who preceded him in death. On Nov. 23, 1940, he married Roma M. Walters, and she died Nov. 4, 1995.
Surviving are his companion, Evelyn Hanson, of Wapakoneta; two daughters, Dr. Roberta Loewy, of Sacramento, Calif., Rebecca (John) Seals, of Wapakoneta; five grandchildren, Tom Loewy, Dave (Amy) Loewy, Jamie (Jarrod) Broadman, Kelly (Darrell) Nagel, and Julie (Greg) Mescher; seveenn great-grandchildren, Nicholas Loewy, Sarah Loewy, Amanda Stewart, Justin Stewart, Sarah Stewart, Vita Mescher, and Jacie Nagel.
He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Springer; a son-in-law, Dr. Erich Loewy; two brothers, Paul Springer, and Charles “Bus” Springer; and two sisters, Mary Magdalene Terry, and Gertrude “Babe” Springer.
A U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War, Mr. Springer specialized in logistics. He went on to work in the railroad business for several years, finally retiring in 1976 as a manager for the Norfolk & Southern Railroad Co. His memberships included the Wapakoneta V.F.W. Post 8445, and the American Legion Post 323 in St. Marys. He was a former member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie 691, Wapakoneta. Between his two military stints and his career in the railroad business, Springer played music in a popular area band, The Rhapsodiers, which thrived in the West Central Ohio ballroom scene of the post World War II era.
A celebration of a life well lived will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday at American Legion Post 330 in Wapakoneta.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the V.A. Medical Center in Dayton.
