Robert "Bob" Joseph Jennings, 80, passed away on March 30, 2014, at 1 a.m. peacefully at his residence. RobertÂ was born on March 24, 1934, in Lima, to Raymond and Mary "Mayme" (Dahill) Jennings, who preceded him in death. OnÂ June 29, 1957, he married Joan E.Kohler Jennings who survives in Lima.Â Â Â Â
Bob attended the St. John's Parish School and then joined the United States Marine Corp. He served during the Korean War and attained the rank of MSGT. He spent four years in the enlisted and more than 20 years as part of the reserves, retiring in 1994. While in the reserves, he also worked as a firefighter with the Lima Fire Department for 28 years, retiring in 1986 and held the rank as Captain. He also worked part time as a salesman with various companies, including Sears Roebuck. With his wife, he was the owner and operator of the Pizza Village in Lima from 1975 until it burnt down in 1978. He was a member ofÂ St. Charles Catholic Church and volunteered in the school's cafeteria. He was a member of the VFW #1275. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing cards, reading, telling stories and writing. He enjoyed writing stories reminiscing about growing up in Lima. A few of these stories were published. He also cherished spending time with his fellow veteran Justin Reynolds, at Shawnee Manor.
He is survived by a son, Michael L. Jennings, of Baltimore, Md.; daughter, Joan (Chris) Sdregas, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; son, Raymond D. (Carolyn) Jennings, of Midland, Mich.; son, William E. (Pam Russell) Jennings, of Westwood, Kan.; son, James P. (Roy Lucas) Jennings, of Miami, Fla.; daughter, Jean M. Blubaugh of Lima; 11 grandchildren, Sam and Connor Jennings, Liz, James and Caroline Sdregas, Audrey, Robert Joseph "Joe" and Samantha Jennings, Alexander, Colton and Jessica Blubaugh.
He was preceded in death by one brother, John Jennings, and four sisters, Mary M. Jennings, Rosemary Banks, Elizabeth "Betty" Lee and Madonna Schmenk.Â He leaves behind many cherished nieces and nephews and a wide network of friends.Â Â Â Â
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at the St. John's Catholic Church on Friday April 4, 2014, at 10 a.m. Officiating will be Fr. David Ross. Friends may call on Thursday at the Chiles-Laman Funeral And Cremation Services Shawnee Chapel from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., followed by an 8 p.m. parish wake service. Entombment will be in Gethsemani Cemetery Mausoleum following the service.Â Military rites will be provided by VFW Post #1275. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the St. Rita's Hospice.
