Richard Lyman Gossard, 73, of Wapakoneta, died suddenly at his residence on Monday, May 26, 2014.
He is survived by his wife, Carol (Walter) Gossard, son, Richard Gossard, Jr., and daughter, Barbara (John) Steger.
Dick was a 1958 graduate of Sidney High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Bowling Green State University and a Master of Education degree at Xavier.
He and his wife and children moved to Naples, Fla. in 1979, where he and Carol taught school in the Collier County School System until they retired in 1999. Upon retirement, Dick spent time each week teaching adults to read, and he and Carol both tutored school children in a variety of classroom subjects.
Dick was an avid gardener, spending just slightly more time working his garden than sharing the fruits of his labors, often leaving small bouquets of roses on doorsteps and office reception counters, as well as boxes of fruits and vegetables.
Tending the flowers he grew gave him an appreciation of garden and shrub flowers to the exclusion of cut flowers, and his family knows he would appreciate donations made to support sanctuary for the Florida Panther in care of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, 2014, at First United Methodist Church in Sidney, Ohio. Pastor Jane Madden will be officiating. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church. Burial will follow at Pearl Cemetery in Swanders, Ohio.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Florida Panther National Wildlife Refuge, 3860 Tollgate Boulevard, Suite 300 Naples, FL 34114.
The family has entrusted Schlosser Funeral Home & Cremation Services, in Wapakoneta, to handle the arrangements.
