Wapakoneta City Schools Board of Education members this week approved several personnel matters including, the resignations of Wapakoneta High School Principal Aaron Rex and Wapakoneta High School Secretary Jennifer Adkins.
Rex’s resignation is effective Feb. 1, while Adkins’ was effective Jan. 22.
Rex, who has been with the district 16 years, seven of which he spent as high school principal, plans to start in his new position as superintendent of Archbold Area Schools on Feb. 4.
“Obviously, we are going to miss Mr. Rex,” Horner said. “He was a great person for our high school and will be a great superintendent. I am proud of this guy.”
Board members also extended their wishes of congratulations and good luck.
“It’s a great opportunity,” Rex said thanking the board for taking a chance on him as a principal after just a year serving as assistant principal at Wapakoneta High School.
He said experiences he had here were the reason he could move on to the superintendent’s position.
Board members approved updates to several board policies as they relate to the use of personal communication devices, whistleblower protection, non-discrimination and equal employment opportunity, employment of administrators, non-discrimination and access to quality employment opportunity, field and other district-sponsored trips, student assessment and academic intervention services, third-grade reading guarantee, and non-renewal of teacher contracts. A policy on evaluation of teachers on limited contracts was deleted.
Horner said most of the changes were relatively small, with the exception of the third-grade reading guarantee, which district administrators continue to work on moving forward with.
“It’s something we need to stay on top of,” Horner said of Ohio’s new stipulation that beginning with students entering third-grade in 2013-14, they cannot be promoted to fourth-grade if they score below a certain level on the state reading test.
The level the students must achieve is slightly below the actual passing score on the state reading test. There are some exceptions.
In other personnel matters, board members approved:
• Supplemental contracts for the 2013-14 school year for Doug Frye as varsity football coach at approximately $6,545; Mark Cook as varsity cross country coach at approximately $4,900; Ross Kantner as varsity girls soccer coach at approximately $4,900; Mike Klock as varsity girls tennis coach at approximately $3,927; Ken Wayman as varsity boys golf coach at approximately $3,927; Dawn West as varsity girls golf coach at approximately $3,927; and Keith Rambin as varsity boys soccer coach at approximately $3,927.
• Disability retirement of Diana Krites, a bus driver and cafeteria worker at Wapakoneta Elementary School, effective Feb. 1, 2013. Her last day of work was Jan. 16.
• Resignation of Adam Friemering from the supplemental position of assistant softball coach.
• Employment of substitutes, including two cafeteria workers, a para-educator and secretary, for the 2012-13 school year.
In other matters, board members
• Accepted approximately $9,544 from the Wapakoneta Elementary School PTO for document cameras and supplies to be used for projecting papers and items onto whiteboards in classrooms. Board member Pat Gibson thanked all the district’s PTOs for the contributions they make, which takes stress off the general fund.
Following regular session, the board met in executive session to discuss the appointment or employment of an employee or official with no action taken.
