A former Wapakoneta fire chief will be handing emergency response coordination full-time for the Auglaize County Health Department.
Don Jump, who also has recently served as the president of the Wapakoneta City Council, a member of the Local Emergency Planning Commission (LEPC) and as a member of the Wapakoneta
Area Economic Development Council, was officially named to the position of emergency response coordinator during a meeting of the Health Board this week.
Unofficially he started in his new position last week.
Jump takes over for Mike Wurst, who recently announced his plans to retire from the position, which he held most recently on a part-time basis.
Jump, who when he retired from the Wapakoneta Fire Department said he planned to find other ways to serve the community, is being trained and getting acclimated to his new position.
Auglaize County Health Commissioner Charlotte Parsons said the position has been slightly revamped and included among Jumpâ€™s responsibilities are to be overseeing all emergency response planning, training staff, overseeing the Medical Reserves Corps, active involvement in LEPC, and attendance at regional and state meetings.
Parsons said Jumpâ€™s years of training and experience in emergency response â€” fire and EMS â€” are what put him at the top of the list of candidates for the position. He also is certified in the rigorous coursework required to be an Ohio Fire Executive.
â€śHis city council experience gives him a greater understanding of how all entities work together in the community and he has education and experience in accounting, which demonstrates his attention to detail,â€ť Parsons said.
â€śA big part of this job is training and thatâ€™s an area he excels in,â€ť she said. â€śHe also is involved in many projects in the community beyond his work, which is a reflection of his dedication to improving Auglaize County.â€ť
Parsons said there were several other good candidates, but she believes Jump is the best fit.
â€śI have no doubt that he will do a great job,â€ť Parsons said.
In other business, in compliance with suggestions made during a recent state audit, Auglaize County Health Board members approved setting maximum amounts for blanket certifications or purchase orders.
Parsons said although there were no findings for citations against the Health Board from the recent audit, this was a suggestion made.
Business is to continue as usual as the Health Board has followed the Auglaize County auditorâ€™s recommendations in the past with the maximum amount for a purchase order to an individual vendor set at $5,000 up to $80,000 for a super blanket, which reduces the number of purchase orders required.
In other business, the Auglaize County Health Board approved the following:
â€˘ The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP)â€™s recommendations for adult, child and teen immunizations, as well as medical management of vaccine reactions in children and teens as of 2011. Auglaize County Nursing Supervisor Cindy Jones said the three-part recommendations are approved every year. She said sometimes at what age shots should be given or start, as well as intervals and other details do change periodically.

â€˘ Renewal of contracts with Stephanie Mosler as a family planning pharmacist and with Minster and New Knoxville school districts for school nurse services.
â€˘ Fourteen-day order for Tammie Pits, 13619 State Route 219, to repair aeration system and put it back into proper working condition.
