RAC hosts color, collage expert

September 5, 2012

The Riverside Art Center is gearing up for a workshop favorite to host a collage seminar — which a center member says may fill up quickly.

Dayton resident Nita Leland will be teaching a one-day collage workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 29 at the Riverside Art Center in Wapakoneta. The deadline for registration is Sept. 15.

“Nita was here in May for a color workshop and we loved it so much that we decided to have her back for a collage workshop,” Riverside Art Center member Pam Knoch said. “She is such a patient teacher we all enjoyed the experience and learned a lot.”

The cost for the workshop is $65, but a $25 non-fundable deposit is required to hold the spot.

“This workshop will fill up quickly as Nita is a nationally known teacher and lecturer,” Knoch said. “We are fortunate to have her at Riverside at this bargain price.”

Leland has written several books on color and collage and hosts workshops all around the country.

In 1970, Leland was presented with a gift of watercolor paints, brushes and papers for her birthday from her husband. She then taught watercolor painting for several years and developed a passion for color, which led to teaching a color workshop.

In 1985, she published her first book “Exploring Color,” followed by “The Creative Artist” in 1990 and “Creative Techniques” in 1994.

Another book, “Exploring Color Revised” was published in 1998 followed by “The New Creative Artist” in 2006 and “Confident Color” in 2008, which continued her exploration into creativity and color.

In 2000, she self published “Exploring Color Coloring Book,” a workbook that accompanied the revised version of her color book.

Leland continues to teach watercolor classes in the Dayton area and instructs workshops throughout the United States and Canada in color, creativity, and collage.

Her website and blog both titled “Exploring Color and Creativity” have provided information and links for artist since 1998. She released two DVDs in 2009 to teach about color and collage techniques.

“Nita encourages beginners to take this workshop as you will learn basics as well as expert tips to make a beautiful piece of art,” Knoch said. “If you have ever thought you would like to learn collage, this is a must workshop.”

Leland will have her books available for purchase at the workshop.
