PREP ROUNDUP: Wapak wins girls golf quad
VAN WERT â The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls golf team picked up three wins with a quad-match win Thursday at Hickory Sticks Golf Course in Van Wert.
Wapak shot a 195 to best Marion Local (197), Lincolnview (210) and Crestview (210).
The wins lifted the Redskin to 6-8 on the season.
Wapak senior Courtney Knippen carded a 42 to tie Lincolnviewâs Kailyn Brant for medalist honors.
Rounding out the scoring for the Redskins were Hannah Smith with a 45, Shelby Kohler â who had just returned from an illness â with a 53 and Bryly Beaman with a 55.
âIt was nice to get three wins tonight,â Wapak coach Dawn West said. âCourtney and Hannah stepped up and did an excellent job of playing Hickory Sticks. They both executed their shots very well and did a nice job of physically managing their games.
âWe still need to work on the mental aspect of the game as they both had a little bit of nerves jump up on them and cost them a few strokes. ...
âIt was also nice to night to have Shelby back in our lineup. She didnât do as well as she would of liked, but just getting her back out on the golf course swinging again was good to see.â
Wapak will be back in action on Tuesday with Coldwater at Northmoor.
Van Wert tops Wapak
The Redskins shot their highest round of the year. Their top two golfers â Caleb Acheson and Drew Wayman â shot a combined 15 strokes above their averages. And No. 3 Bobby Crow was three strokes higher than usual.
âIt was one of those matches that Caleb and Drew shot unusually high and at the same time,â Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. âI told the guys, thatâs golf. It happens. All they need to do is bounce back at home and shoot well against Kenton on Monday.â
Leading the way for Wapak was Acheson with a 45. Crow (46), Aaron Johnson (47), Drew Wayman (50), Josh Apple (51) and Marshall Gerlach (56) rounded out the scoring.
Medalist was Van Wertâs Vincent Moreland with a 37.
The Cougars are 7-1. Wapak is 4-4.
