PREP ROUNDUP: Redskins rally past Pirates

With the wind to its back in the second half, the Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys soccer team rallied from a 1-0 deficit to post a 3-1 win over the Bluffton Pirates on Tuesday at Harmon Field.
Bluffton took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute on a goal by Lucas Harnish and held that advantage through the rest of the first half.
Colin Mankin put the Redskins on the board with a goal in the 52nd minute.
Travis Bertram scored on an assist from Andy Faller to put Wapak on top 2-1 in the 69th minute. And Cody Benny knocked in the Redskins’ third goal in the 81st minute.
Wapak outshot Bluffton 15-10, 9-8 on-goal.
Goalkeeper Zach Holtzapple recorded seven saves for the Redskins.
Wapak’s JV team also won 3-1.

GIRLS TENNIS
Wapak routs Defiance
Wapak posted a 5-0 win in the first varsity match at the new high school courts on Tuesday.
Makenzie Klock blanked Defiance’s Colleen Johns 6-0, 6-0 in first singles.
In second singles, Shelby Gillespie topped Cindy Davis 6-3, 6-1.
Annie Harrod defeated Kristine Shannon 6-1, 6-0 in third singles.
The first-doubles team of Katie Martin and Kiersten Wellons bested Hannah Lamb and Danielle Vance 6-2, 6-2.
And Chloe Veit and Rachel Roberts won over Abby Polce and Karen Krontz 6-0, 6-1.
Wapak is now 6-3 overall and 3-2 in the WBL

BOYS GOLF
Defiance top Wapak
Defiance defeated the Wapak varsity boys golf team 165-178 Tuesday at Eagle Rock Golf Course in Defiance.
“The wind and the cold made it tough for both teams,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “Unfortunately, the home team took advantage of the course and they beat us by 13 strokes. I give a lot of credit to both teams for battling in the wind and the cold.”
Wapak’s Caleb Acheson was co-medalist with Defiance’s Henry Weisgerber with a 38.
Drew Wayman followed with a 43, Bobby Crow a 47 and Marshall Gerlach a 50. Aaron Johnson and Josh Apple both recorded 53’s.
Defiance is 5-0. Wapak is 3-2.

Botkins wins
The Trojans defeated Riverside in a dual match tough weather conditions, 177-196, on Tuesday.
Nate Cisco carded a 42 for medalist. Connor Bornhorst (43), Cory Kies (45), Adam Bornhorst (47) and Nick Okuley (47) rounded out the scoring.
On Saturday, Botkins placed sixth in the 16-team Versailles Invitational at Stillwater Golf Course. The Trojans shot a 350.
Leading the team were Okuley (84), Alex Roberts (88), Adam Bornhorst (89) and Connor Bornhorst (89).
On Friday, Botkins beat New Knoxville 170-196.
Connor Bornhorst led the way with a 39.

W-G falls
Temple Christian edged the Tigers by five strokes in a tri-match on Tuesday.
The Pioneers shot a 196, besting Waynesfield-Goshen’s 201 and Marion Catholic’s 211.
Temple’s Israel Whitman was medalist with a 43.
Eric Shaner led W-G with a 47, followed by Garrett Hauenstein (48), Justus Ball (50) and Ryan Agnew (56).
The Tigers are 5-8 overall and 5-6 in the NWCC.

GIRLS GOLF
’Skins top New Bremen
Wapakoneta routed New Bremen 195-225 in a dual match Tuesday at Arrowhead Golf Course in Minster.
Wapak is 3-6 overall.
Medalist in the match was the Redskins’ Shelby Kohler with a 45.
Rounding out the scoring for Wapak was Courtney Knippen with a 47, Hannah Smith with a 50 and Zoe Rayburn with a 53.
“We did a great job tonight of staying focused in the conditions we had tonight,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “We’ve been accustomed to 80’s and 90’s and tonight was low 60’s cold and windy. Usually we don’t see this type of weather till the end of the season.”
Wapak was coming off a second-place finish in the White Small Varsity Division of the LCC Invitational on Saturday at Hawthorne Hills.
The Redskins (210)were nine strokes back of first-place St. Ursula (201).
Medalist was St. Ursula’s Emily Antypas with a 46.
Knippen tied for second place overall with a 47.
Rayburn shot a personal-best 49, good enough for 5th overall. Smith carded a 56 and Kohler a 58.
“I am extremely excited for Zoe,” West said. “This was a personal best for her and she did a great job out there taking care of her game. She did a nice job of focusing and executing some really good golf shots. She played today as a more confident golfer.”

VOLLEYBALL
Cavs sweep Wapak
The Redskins varsity volleyball team suffered a three-game loss at Coldwater on Tuesday.
The Cavaliers took the first game 25-20 and the second 25-19 before holding off Wapak 25-22 in the third to complete the sweep.
On Saturday, Wapak defeated Sidney in three games (25-17, 25-11 and 25-19).
Morgan Quellhorst had 13 kills in the win. Carli Sammons recorded six aces.
Nicole Brown tallied 20 assists. Ashley Cox and Krissy Stienbaugh both had 15 digs.
Megan Hayzlett posted five blocks.

CROSS COUNTRY
Wapak girls win
The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity girls team rolled to the win in the Wapak Night Meet on Saturday night at Veterans Park.
Wapak’s top five runners all finished in the top 11 overall.
Summer Griner was the highest Redskins finisher at sixth place. Griner completed the distance in 22:48. Teammate Elizabeth Martin was seventh, just one second behind Griner.
Courtney Mosgrove (9th, 23:23), Jessica Plaugher (10th, 23:34) and Jenna Sawmiller (11th, 23:39) rounded out the Wapak top five.
Kalida was second overall, followed by St. Marys.
The Redskins boys team took third behind Defiance and St. Marys.
Caleb Hennon (18:43) was the top Wapak finisher at ninth.
Sam Harrod posted an 18:53 to take 11th.
Alec Benny (15th, 19:10), John Martin (20th, 19:43) and Ryan O’Neil (29th, 20:14) rounded out the top five.

Botkins girls win
For the second year in a row, the Trojans girls varsity team was crowned champions of the 15-team Columbus Grove Invitational on Saturday.
Botkins’ top five finishers were Brittany Bailey (3rd, 20:17), Shelbie Bailey (8th, 21:21), Liz Knoop (10th, 21:29), Elleah Cooper (15th, 22:01) and Jackie Smith (22nd, 22:25).
The varsity boys finished 10th out of 17 teams at Columbus Grove.
Botkins’ top five was Austin Jones (30th, 18:10), Roger Miller (42nd, 18:34), Tyler Egbert (54th, 18:57), Seth Hoying (75th, 19:37) and Josh Schwartz (79th, 19:54).
