PREP ROUNDUP: Golf teams win; Knippen cards record 38
The Wapakoneta Redskins varsity boys golf team defeated the Celina Bulldogs 168-184 in a Western Buckeye League dual match Thursday at the Wapakoneta Country Club.
Wapak’s 168 was its lowest round of the year at home and its first time to break 170.
“When you have two scores in the 30’s and two in the 40’s, the team score will improve,” Wapak coach Ken Wayman said. “We are improving match-to-match. But I still think our best score is yet to come.
“All we need is to have two guys shoot consistently in the low 40’s and we will have a really good score.”
Leading the way for Wapak were co-medalists junior Caleb Acheson and sophomore Bobby Crow, who each carded a 39.
Freshman Drew Wayman turned in a 44 followed by Marshall Gerlach (46), Josh Apple (49),and Aaron Johnson (56).
Wapak is now 3-1 in WBL duals. Celina is 2-2.
The Botkins golf team defeated Russia in a key league match, 166-171, Thursday at Stillwater Golf Course.
The Trojans were lead by Connor Bornhorst (40), Nick Okuley (41), Nate Cisco (42), Adam Bornhorst (43), Cory Kies (45) and Seth Hanna (49).
The Trojans defeated Houston 170-207 on Tuesday.
Connor Bornhorst carded a 39, Okuley a 43, and Adam Bornhorst and Cisco each turned in a 44.
Senior Courtney Knippen broke the Wapakoneta school record with a nine-hole round of 38 to lead the Redskins girls team to a 202-209 win over St. Henry on Thursday at Wapak Couuntry Club.
“What a great round for Courtney tonight,” Wapak coach Dawn West said. “She hit the ball well and had some good looks at birdie that just didn’t quite fall in. But obviously she was doing a lot of things well to shoot 38 at home”
Rounding out the scoring for the Redskins (2-6) were Shelby Kohler (47), Hannah Smith (56) and Zoe Rayburn (61).
Wapak was coming off a 182-191 loss to LCC on Wednesday.
Knippen was medalist again with a 41, followed by Kohler at 44, Smith with a 52 and Bryly Beaman with a 54.
The Wapakoneta varsity volleyball team swept Elida in three games on Thursday at Elida.
On Tuesday, the Redskins suffered at three-game defeat (25-21, 25-222, 25-16) at Anna.
