A possible case of voter fraud is being turned over to the Auglaize County Sheriff’s Office to investigate.

Auglaize County Elections Board Director Carolyn Campbell said in reconciling signature books after the Nov. 6 presidential election, they came across an incident of possible fraud where a voter cast ballots twice — once in the wrong precinct and once in the right precinct.

“We double checked, we talked to poll workers, we tried to figure out what happened,” Campbell said. “Sometimes it looks like it is voter fraud but after a second look it turns out not to be.

“We don’t know in this case if there was intent or not, but they did vote twice,” she said.

Campbell declined to provide the name of the voter in question at this time, or the precincts or races voted in, however she said the incident should not impact any races.

During a meeting Wednesday, Auglaize County Election Board members decided unanimously to turn over the incident to the Sheriff’s Office to investigate further.

Making the motion, board member Bill Roth said he felt it needed to be investigated.

“We need to see what happened and why,” board member Brent Henschen said.

Campbell said she planned to turn their paperwork and information over to officals with the Sheriff’s Office on Thursday for them to begin looking into the matter.

“We have never had this happen before to know what steps to take,” Campbell said. “A lot of times we find when we dig a little deeper that it wasn’t the case, but too many arrows point at it here. It’s been a long time since anything like this warranted a second look.”

She said from this point on it would the decision of how to proceed would be left up to officials with the Sheriff’s Office and prosecutors with the Auglaize County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office on whether criminal charges would be filed.

“It’s out of our hands,” Campbell said.
