A bipartisan, bicameral effort is underway to reauthorize legislation to reduce crime by helping people released from prison re-enter society and the work force.
Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman, of Ohio, and Democratic U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, of Rhode Island, recently introduced the Recidivism Reduction & Public Safety Act of 2013 on the Senate floor and before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee chaired by Democratic Sen. Patrick Leahy, of Vermont. A companion bill has been introduced by Republican U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, of Wisconsin, and Democratic U.S. Rep. Danny Davis, of Illinois.
