A night to remember

April 30, 2012

Alex Koch, Annie and Emily Henderson and Connor Metz pose for a photo at the Henderson home before the Wapakoneta High School prom.

Wapakoneta High School junior Alex Koch was especially excited for the event, because he had the opportunity to take his father’s 1987 Oldsmobile 442 out to pick up his date Annie Henderson, a Wapakoneta High School junior.

This vehicle was special because it was the same transportation that his father drove to pick up his date for their prom when they were in high school and his wife when they got married.

“I’ve only drove it once or twice,” the son of Shelley and Mark Koch said. “Most of my friends also have special cars that they are driving, too.”

Annie and Alex said that they were excited for the dance, and Annie said the dance would be extra special for her, because her sister, Emily, who is a freshman at Miami University, also attended prom, with her date, Wapakoneta High School senior Connor Metz.

“I’m excited to share the experience,” Annie said. “I always wanted to go to prom with her and get pictures with her.”

Each sibling in the Henderson family is two years apart in age, so the sisters did not think they would have the opportunity to experience prom together.

Emily was also excited to share the evening with her younger sister.

“The last two years, I went to prom and had a great time,” Emily said. “I am very excited to get to experience prom with Annie. Prom is a very special part of a young woman’s life. We always seem to make the best out of every situation, and there is never a dull moment between the two of us.”

The daughters of Tonya and Steve Henderson were not just excited for the dance, but also to “get all done up.”

Annie’s dress was a silver, mermaid-style dress with one strap — which she purchased from the Bridal Emporium, in Wapakoneta.

“It was the first place I went to, and I tried on six dresses, and picked out the silver one,” Annie said.

Annie went back to the Bridal Emporium with Alex to pick out his tuxedo with his mother — where they had picked out a black tuxedo with a matching silver vest to accent Annie’s dress.

The night before prom, Annie had her hair all rolled up in sponge rollers, for her beautician to style an updo the afternoon of prom and she did her own nails, along with doing her sister’s nails.

When their hair was done, the sisters walked the gym floors, showing off their dresses, at Promenade, which was held at the Wapakoneta High School.

At the end of Promenade, Ryan Kremer was crowned prom king and Janki Patel was crowned prom queen.

Their court consisted of seniors Alex Curtis, Josh Moots, Chris Schwartz, Ryan Azbell, Sarah Sawmiller, Kelsey Barrett, Tasha Helmstetter and Justine Waterman.

By the time Promenade rolled around on Saturday, Annie, her date and friends all had their smiles perfected as they did photos at her friend’s house, Ashlie Cox, where parents, grandparents and siblings took photos prior to the evening’s festivities.

The group of friends all decided to order in from Woody’s Diner, and all the parents brought a side dish.

“I think it’s nice,” Ashlie said of the idea of ordering in and having dinner at her home for prom. “It saves money. With the costs of the dress, nails, tickets, it just saves money.”

Ashlie said she was excited that the dance was going to be held at The Grand Plaza Banquet Hall.

“I’m most excited about it being at the plaza this year,” the daughter of Lisa Etgen and Butch Cox said. “We are the first group to experience this location.”

Ashlie said one of her favorite parts of prom is just having one last chance to spend together with the seniors before they graduate.
