Mary Ellen Cardone, 89, formerly of Lima and Wapakoneta area, died at 9:23 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 28, 2013, at St. Thomas Midtown Hospital, Nashville, Tenn. She was born Dec. 18, 1923, in Wapakoneta, to Leroy and Pauline (Neidemire) Wellington, who preceded her in death.
Her mother died when she was five and her brother Clarence was three. They lived with her grandmother until she was about fourteen when she, her father and her brother moved out and she kept house for them.
Then her dad got a job in Dayton in 1941, so she and her brother again stayed with their grandmother until June so she could graduate with her class from Blume High School in June of 1941. During those months, she met Joe Cardone when he was putting siding on grandma’s house. He was only there two days because he was going into the Army. It was love at first sight for both because he wrote to her and their love grew through letters. She and her brother moved to Dayton with their dad after she graduated.
She married Joe Cardone on Feb. 26, 1944, in St. John’s Rectory, Lima. She was with him in California for about three months until he went overseas. She stayed with his parents in Lima until he was discharged from the Army on Dec. 18, 1945. They lived in Lima and then moved to Dayton where they spent most of their married years. They celebrated their 50th anniversary on Feb. 26, 1994.
Since their mother died when they were so young, she and her brother were very close. He died in 2001. She and Joe moved to Nashville in 2001 to be near their daughter. Joe died Nov. 20, 2002.
Surviving are three children, Roy Cardone of Lewisburg, Teresa Grasela of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., and Donna Becker of Merritt Island, Fla.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
