In an age where online shopping has increasingly challenged retail stores, many businesses are seeing their profits suffer.
But for Dad’s Toy Shop in Wapakoneta, the online marketplace has had little affect on business.
“We have no online sales system because we like being able to be in contact with our customers,” said J.P.
Metz, co-owner of Dad’s Toy Shop, a hobby store on West Auglaize Street. “Our expertise separates us from the online marketplace, and our customers are willing to pay a little more to have our ability to help them if something goes wrong.”
Metz said his profits modulate with the times, but he never noticed a dip in sales once the online sales boom started.
Dad’s Hobby Shop opened in Wapakoneta in 1975, and has been at its current location since 1985. Metz said he wanted to open a hobby shop because one did not exist in Wapakoneta when he was growing up.
“We couldn’t buy hobby stuff here in Wapak at the time,” he said. “We were into remote controlled airplanes and cars, and there just wasn’t anything in town.”
