Karl P. Kohler, Jr., 89, of Wapakoneta, died at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at the Wapakoneta Manor.
He was born Nov. 2, 1921, in Columbus, the son of Mary Nelle (Chiesa) and Karl P. Kohler, who preceded him in death. On Sept. 1, 1950, he married Sue Carole Spees, and she survives in Wapakoneta.
Also surviving are two sons, Kevin S. â€śCoachâ€ť (Carla) Kohler, of Wapakoneta, Kim E. (Lisa) Kohler, Chelsea, Ala.; five grandchildren; 5 great- grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Alice Kohler, of Rogers, Ark.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donnet Kohler.
Karl attended St. Joseph Elementary School, and was a 1939 graduate of Blume High School, both of Wapakoneta. He joined the 136th F.A. Medical Detachment of the Ohio National Guard 37th Division in July, 1940, and spent 10 Â˝ months in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of Operations. He then applied for transfer to the Aviation Cadet Training with the U. S. Army Air Corps, and was accepted for air crew training. He later graduated from Carlsbad Army Airfield Bombardier School and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant with the U.S. Army Air Corps in May, 1943. He attended Ohio Northern University, Ada. He was employed at the Lima Locomotive Works for 14 years and later retired in January of 1982 from the Engineering Dept. at Minster Machine Co., after 22 years service. A member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he was also a member of American Legion, Post 330, and the VFW Post 8445, all of Wapakoneta.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wapakoneta, with the Rev. Matthew Lee officiating. Burial of the cremated remains will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery in Wapakoneta, where military rites will be conducted by the Wapakoneta VFW.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday and 9-9:45 a.m. Saturday at Bayliff & Eley Funeral Home in Wapakoneta.
