Irish handle Botkins in sectional final

The Springfield Catholic Central Irish were too much for the Botkins Trojans in their 3-0 win Thursday in a Division IV Southwest District volleyball sectional championship, played at Tippecanoe High School in Tipp City.

The Irish had winning scores of 25-12, 25-9 and 25-13.

Catholic Central (23-1) was Division IV’s eighth-ranked team in the Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches Association poll released Monday.

The loss Thursday ended Botkins’ season with a 8-16 record.

For the Trojans, statistically, Allison Guckes notched 18 digs Thursday, while Denise Schwartz had 10 digs and six kills.

Botkins seniors Vicki Grillot, Becca Knoop, Rachelle Maurer and Schwartz each played in their final high school match Thursday.

The Irish advanced to a district competition with their win Thursday.

They will face Pleasant Hill Newton Local at 6 p.m. Tuesday in a Division IV district semifinal at Tippecanoe High School.
